Ode to Rome

Newton, MA

Challenge: The 2012 JLB Show House, Newton, MA “cloak room” was an intriguing canvas of proportion and details.

The long hallway is transformed into a whimsical Romanesque space. Rusty spherical pendants cast interesting shadows on the narrow space. A toned taupe paint visually brings the ceiling down. The tile-patterned canvas floor
cloth was designed and painted by Jeanne. The perfect wall-to-wall fit adds to the illusion. Wallpaper columns by Zoffany are installed 46″ apart. Unique for a show house room, the space is more about creativity and hand-craft
and less about furnishings and decoration. Bill created wooden pediments to hang above both doorways. And Charlestown artist, Joe Trepiccione, worked his magic on the carved Styrofoam Gorgon heads.

Fun fact: Trine Marie Johansen, a summer intern from Norway, assisted me in creating this space.
